Aitor Karanka leaves relegation-battling Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough have sacked manager Aitor Karanka following a run of 10 Premier League games without a win.
Karanka leaves with the club 19th in the table with 11 games to play, having scored only two goals in eight league games in 2017.
"Middlesbrough Football Club can today confirm the departure of Head Coach Aitor Karanka," a statement on the club's official website confirmed. "Following discussions, both parties have agreed that it is in the best interests of the club to make this change.
"The club would like to thank Aitor for all his hard work over the past three-and-a-half years and for the success we've had during that time. We wish him all the best for the future."
Karanka said: "I'd like to thank Middlesbrough for a wonderful opportunity and the players, staff and all the people at the club who I have worked with.
"I'd also like to thank the fans for their support. This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future."
Middlesbrough confirmed Steve Agnew will step up from his role as assistant head coach to take control of first team affairs with immediate effect.

After leaving Patrick Bamford and Stewart Downing out of the squad for the FA Cup quarterfinal defeat against Manchester City on Saturday, Karanka said: "Where the players show me that they are ready to play and they are fighting and they are going to fight for the club is on the training ground every day.
"I am with them every day and on Friday, I will always choose at least 18 fighters."
Karanka, previously an assistant to Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, was appointed in 2013 and led the club to promotion in 2016.

UCL: Play like a man!' - Nasri slams 'cheat' Vardy after red card

The ex-Arsenal man was left fuming by the apparent play acting of the England striker as Leicester City progressed to the Champions League last eight
Samir Nasri has labelled Jamie Vardy a "cheat" following the Leicester City striker's role in the Sevilla star's red card in Tuesday's Champions League last 16 second leg.

Goals from Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton saw the Foxes into the quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history, with Nasri receiving his marching orders in the second half following a clash with Vardy.

England international Vardy seemed to push Nasri off the ball, leading to the former Arsenal man reacting and moving his head towards Vardy's and receiving his marching orders.
Nasri, though, felt Vardy had acted in a cowardly manner, claiming the forward dived to get him in trouble.

"He didn’t say anything but he played it well. We went face to face and then he fell on the floor," he told reporters.

"I thought the English player was tougher than that. He was the one who came to my face, and then went on the floor. He played it well.

"I didn’t touch him, I didn’t do anything with my head. He went on the floor and then the referee gave us both a yellow card.

"For me, he is a cheat. Because if he was a foreign player, you the English press would say he is a cheat.

Nasri needed to be restrained following his dismissal, and seemed to gesture towards Vardy that he would speak to him after the game.

But the former France international was reluctant to reveal exactly what he would have told the Leicester man so as to avoid any further punishment.
"I would love to speak to him but you know too many cameras, too many security, and I have to think about next year and not getting a big suspension.
"We are not playing in the same league so it would be hard for me to get back at him. It doesn’t matter any more."

"They were winning 2-0, play the game like a man. Win it. You are not better than us but you are winning 2-0, you will qualify, just play the game. You have quality, you are an international player, you don’t need to do that."

Piala FA : Kedah terlalu kebal

PEMAIN Perak, Yashir Armando Pinto Islame (kanan) diasak pemain Kedah, Mohd.

Arsenal protesters renew calls for Arsene Wenger to leave as they demand 'Wexit' ahead of FA Cup victory over Lincoln at the Emirates

  • Arsene Wenger's contract at Arsenal is up at the end of the current season
  • Some Gunners supporters have had enough of the Frenchman's reign
  • A second protest in a week against Wenger took place outside the Emirates
  • Banners calling for 'Wexit' were unfurled ahead of the game against Lincoln
Arsenal fans' calls for a change of manager at the Emirates Stadium continued apace on Saturday with banners demanding 'Wexit' flown prior to the FA Cup clash with Lincoln.

Supporters of the Gunners have been becoming increasingly vocal in their opposition to current boss Arsene Wenger over recent weeks, after a declining Premier League campaign gave way to Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Prior to the clash with Bayern on Tuesday, a group of several hundred protesters marched on the Emirates calling for Wenger's removal... and the feat was replicated when the non-League Imps were in town for their quarter-final meeting.

The disgruntled supporters are fed up with the club's poor League and European record
Other fans called for owner Stan Kroenke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis to leave
As well as the 'Wexit' banner, playing on the recent 'Brexit' referendum vote in which the UK opted to leave the European Union, there were messages saying 'every good story has and ending' and '4th place is not a trophy'.

Arsenal had not won the Premier League title in 13 years, during which the only silverware to have occupied the Emirates trophy cabinet is the FA Cup.

That has led to sections of fans begging for 'Wexit'.

It seems unlikely, however, that owner Stan Kroenke is about to take the democratic approach to his manager's future.

There were similar protests before the game against Bayern on Tuesday, which Arsenal lost

A fan holds up a sign reflecting the 10-2 aggregate defeat by Bayern Munich

A statement released by Arsenal earlier this week, from chairman Sir Chips Keswick, outlined that any decision would be made 'mutually'.

The tone of the short missive indicated action would be withheld until the end of the season, at which point Wenger's current contract ends naturally.

'We are fully aware of the attention currently focused on the club and understand the debate,' the statement read.

'We respect that fans are entitled to their different individual opinions but we will always run this great football club with its best long-term interests at heart.

'Arsene has a contract until the end of the season. Any decisions will be made by us mutually and communicated at the right time in the right way.'

A new contract is believed to have previously been on the table for Wenger, should he want to stay on in north London.

IMPS' EMIRATES FA CUP DREAM ENDED BY FIVE-STAR GUNNERS

Lincoln City manager Danny Cowley was left with an abundance of pride at his side’s display despite their Emirates FA Cup campaign coming to an end against Premier League giants Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
The Imps held on valiantly into first-half stoppage time, but Theo Walcott ensured the Gunners would lead by the break.
Olivier Giroud added a second just after half-time, while an unfortunate own goal from centre-back Luke Waterfall all-but-ended the contest, still with half-an-hour to play at Emirates Stadium

Aaron Ramsey scores Arsenal's fifth goal against Lincoln City

Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey added gloss to the scoreline with two more late efforts, a margin far from befitting the excellent fight from the National League side, the first team outside the Football League to reach the quarter-finals in 114 years.
“We found it tough in the second half, we were playing against world-class players but when they scored on the edge of half-time it was always going to be difficult, they got a lot of confidence,” said Cowley.
Theo Walcott celebrates giving Arsenal the lead on the stroke of half time against Lincoln with his 17th goal of the season
“But we’re the first non-league team to get to the quarter-finals in more than 100 years, and at some stage we need to be really proud of what we’ve done.
“We were disappointed to concede that first goal, we got a little bit passive and we needed to be a bit more aggressive, but this is not the time for criticism. This is a time for us to reflect on what we’ve done in the Emirates FA Cup.
“The key for us is to learn from this. We’ve played against some world-class players so we must come away from this as better players and better people.”
Lincoln very nearly took the lead as Petr Cech thwarted Nathan Arnold shot after he showed excellent footwork

It seemed as though Lincoln would hold on until the break, only for Walcott’s fifth FA Cup goal of the campaign putting the Gunners ahead, spinning and firing home a low shot.
That breathed second-half life into Arsene Wenger’s side, with Giroud steering in first-time after some delicious build-up play befitting the divisional difference between the two sides.
FT: Arsenal 5-0 #Imps - impressive second half by the Gunners sees them secure a place in the semis. Only one winner today though.
Still Arsenal pushed on, defiant not to be another Premier League scalp after Lincoln defeated Burnley last time out, adding a third in fortunate circumstances as the captain Waterfall diverted Kieran Gibbs' low cross into his own net.
Sanchez made it four with a delicious curling shot, while Ramsey danced around a host of tired bodies to add a tap-in with 15 minutes to play.
Despite the scoreline, Imps captain Waterfall was delighted with the character shown by his side, a run which had seen them knock out four teams above them in the football pyramid in Oldham, Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley.
“For 45 minutes we’re in the game, we conceded at a poor time and barring that goal there might have been a lot more in the game,” he said.
“It’s no disgrace, we’ve brought 9,000 fans here against a world-class side, and I think the lads have done themselves justice.
“I’ve still got to pinch myself about what we’ve done, to finish it off here in front of 60,000 people, 9,000 travelling fans is amazing.”
Lincoln City became the first non-league team to make it into FA Cup quarter-finals in 103 years with the trip to Arsenal
Arsenal far from had their own way in the match, with Petr Cech needing to be smart to smother chances, though opening scorer Walcott was delighted to reflect on a job well done in front of their own support, now looking forward to a place at Wembley in the semi-finals.
The England forward said: “We went out there and did a job, we knew it would be tense in that first half and it was crucial to go in 1-0.
It was a disappointing evening for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as the midfielder was forced off early through injury
“Give credit to Lincoln, they were fantastic and while this was a step too far for them, it shows the love for the FA Cup.
The Lincoln players can hold their heads up high after reaching the last eight of the FA Cup before ultimately being beaten
“That goal was very crucial. We did the right things but needed to up the tempo, tried to stay very professional out of respect to Lincoln, and it was a good result after a few very tough weeks.”

AGUERO AND SILVA SEND CITY INTO EMIRATES FA CUP SEMI-FINAL

Sergio Aguero and David Silva were on target for Manchester City at the Riverside Stadium

Pablo Zabaleta believes Manchester city’s miserly defence was the key as they comfortably downed Middlesbrough to reach The Emirates FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2013.
David Silva fired home from close-range in the early stages before Sergio Aguero booked City’s place in Monday’s draw after the break.
Boro’s woes in front of goal – they have failed to score in seven of their 10 Premier League games since Christmas – continued but the Citizens have now kept six successive away clean sheets as Pep Guardiola moves closer to a trophy in his first season at the club.
The visitors would have won by more if not for an inspired Brad Guzan in the Middlebrough goal but defender Zabaleta was happy with the manner of the triumph.
“It’s never easy – this a tough place to come and get a result, we know that,” said the Argentine.
“They are a very physical team but dangerous from crosses. I thought we were solid at the back and were dangerous going forward.
“We should have scored a few more goals because we created a lot of chances, but we were the better team and deserved to go through.
“You have to be ready to defend crosses and deal with those long balls at the back. We did that well.”
City went ahead after just three minutes as Zableta found space on the right and although Raheem Sterling could not connect with his ball across the box, Silva slammed home from six yards – taking the Spaniard’s tally to two goals and three assists in his last five FA Cup games.
The visitors looked the more likely to find the net again during the first half as Leroy Sane scuffed a shot straight at Guzan, the Boro stopper repelled a Silva effort and Yaya Toure powered a near-post header wide.

But the hosts did almost nick an equaliser midway through the first period as Rudy Gestede headed goalwards and Claudio Bravo fumbled, but Zabaleta cleared off the line.
After the break, Guzan continued to frustrate the Citizens as he tipped Aguero’s flick on to the post and palmed 20-yard strikes from Silva and Sane wide.
However, Aguero eventually breached the American’s defences on 67 minutes by nipping in front of a defender and steering home Sane’s perfect low cross from six yards.
Boro almost set up a grandstand finish as Fabio’s 80th-minute header was goalbound until John Stones slid clear but City held on, although Sane knows the margin of victory should have been greater.
“We had a lot of chances to score,” he admitted.
“I had a lot chances to make it 3-0 and David [Silva] did as well. If we score it’s easier for us to play our game.
“I’m enjoying playing with Sergio [Aguero] – he’s a great player and it is fun to play alongside him.”
