Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola apologised for his team's part in the mass brawl that resulted in Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho being sent off at the end of their 3-1 defeat by Chelsea - but defended both players.

The home crowd felt referee Anthony Taylor did not help City on the day but Guardiola was clear as to why Chelsea left with the points.
The boss added: "We didn’t win because we missed a lot of chances not because of the referee."
‘It’s a big win and a big result against a really strong team,’ Conte told Chelsea TV afterwards.
‘With the quality of players in their squad I think it’s the most complete in this league. For this reason, I am pleased with the result, and with the players. They showed me great character.
‘We were lucky at the start of the second half because there was one crossbar, and also a good save from Thibaut kept the result at 1-0,’ Conte added.
‘Then we found great strength to score the goal to draw, and then to score the second goal and the third goal.
‘It’s fantastic this because I repeat, it’s not easy to come here and win this game. Now we have to continue.'
Analysis
Chief football writer Phil McNulty:
It is unlikely either Manchester City or Chelsea have heard the last of a shameful conclusion to a high-class game of football as players and officials from both sides became embroiled in ugly scenes.
City's frustration at what they believed was a series of injustices at the hands of referee Anthony Taylor boiled over in injury time as Aguero caught Luiz high and late, which happened after the Argentina striker clashed with the defender at a corner earlier.
Chelsea's Nathaniel Chalobah joined in and was lucky not to see red, while Fernandinho was sent off for grabbing Fabregas.
Even then, Fernandinho had to be forced to leave the pitch and with the whole situation threatening to go completely out of control, it was fortunate referee Taylor was able to blow the final whistle seconds later.
It is hard to see how both clubs can escape censure for a failure to control their players.
Former Premier League striker Jason Roberts on Final Score:
The tackle from Aguero was absolutely outrageous. It's exactly what you don't want to see in football. It was the type of challenge that can break a leg. He's absolutely done it on purpose.
Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton on Match of the Day:
Aguero lost the plot. It's as bad a tackle as you will see - I can't ever remember seeing one as bad as that.
Alex Scott, Arsenal Ladies and England defender on Final Score:
The Football Association has to act. With Aguero, you know that players can get frustrated - but what he did you know you cannot do in football, no way. The thing is, it was such a superb game of football but such a bad ending.
Former England winger Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 live:
Chelsea were clinical and look so well-drilled and fresh. City lost their discipline at the end, which will disappoint Guardiola. And now Aguero will be banned - that will be massive.
December is now going to be tough for Manchester City.

Bpl : Chelsea 2 Arsenal 0 (Zouma'53 Hazard'90)
Premier League champions Chelsea won only their second league game this season against nine-man Arsenal in a fiery match at Stamford Bridge.
Defender Kurt Zouma - preferred to dropped captain John Terry - headed the opening goal after 53 minutes and Chelsea secured only their second win in six Premier League games this season when Eden Hazard's shot flew in off Calum Chambers late on.
This barely tells the story of a game that will leave Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger furious and frustrated in equal measure as he saw his players fall victim to the trademark and predictable wind-up tactics of Chelsea striker Diego Costa.
Arsenal defender Gabriel was sent off seconds before half-time for kicking out at Costa. It came at the end of a lengthy spat after the striker had shoved his hand into the face of Laurent Koscielny three times.
It handed the momentum to Chelsea and Arsenal's misery was complete when Santi Cazorla was given a second yellow card for a foul on Cesc Fabregas.
All this mattered little to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who will regard this win as another sign that the reigning Premier League champions are moving somewhere towards their normal selves.
Mourinho's big call works to perfection
John Terry (left) and Jose Mourinho embraced at the full-time whistle
Mourinho sprung a major surprise by dropping Terry and starting with Zouma alongside Gary Cahill.
The Chelsea manager called Zouma the fastest defender Chelsea have after bringing him on for Terry in the defeat at Manchester City earlier this season. His greater pace was clearly to counter the speed of Theo Walcott, and the powerful youngster coped well.
The added bonus for Mourinho was Zouma's strength in the air that allowed him to get on the end of Fabregas's free-kick to head Chelsea in front after 53 minutes.
So what does this mean for Terry? Is it the beginning of the end for the 34-year-old?
Mourinho knows every decision he makes, particularly those involving Terry, come under great scrutiny these days. Not so long ago, leaving Terry out of a game of such importance would have been unthinkable. No longer.
No-one in their right mind would write off such an enduring and determined figure as Terry, but with the emergence of Zouma and Chelsea's concerted attempts to land Everton's John Stones with offers of £30m, it is clear the former England captain's days as a permanent fixture in Chelsea's line-up are over.
Arsenal's sense of injustice
Costa enjoys cult status as the anti-hero of Stamford Bridge - but you will not hear many warm words for him anywhere else and certainly not from Arsenal.
This was a grim day all-round for the Gunners, not simply because they lost once more to Chelsea and received another setback to their hopes of challenging for the Premier League title, but also because they lost defender Gabriel and midfield man Cazorla to red cards.
And to add to their fury, they also left west London nursing a burning sense of injustice that Costa stayed on despite pushing the rules to the limit and beyond.
The Premier League's angriest man started a chain of events that led to Gabriel's sending off by shoving Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny three times in the face and then barging the defender to the ground.
Gabriel tried to help his team-mate and a lengthy dispute with Costa ended with the Arsenal defender finally being hooked by the obvious bait offered up by the striker, kicking out to receive a straight red card from referee Mike Dean.
Foolish, but surely action also to be taken against Costa for the incident with Koscielny?
Arsenal's reduced numbers made their task almost impossible and altered the face of the game.
Worst of enemies
Arsene Wenger (centre) and Jose Mourinho (right) shook hands at the start of the match
The antipathy between Mourinho and his Arsenal counterpart stretches back to his first spell at Stamford Bridge when he labelled Wenger "a voyeur" for his supposed interest in events at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho hardly helped relations by calling Wenger "a specialist in failure" in February 2014 after his return to Chelsea - then there was the non-handshake at the Community Shield in August when Arsenal's boss finally got the better of "The Special One" at the 14th attempt.
So what did Saturday at a sunny Stamford Bridge bring? Mourinho was in his seat in the technical area long before kick-off and up and out of his seat well before Wenger's entrance seconds before the start.
Mourinho ensured Wenger could not have missed his proffered hand, which was taken in the coldest manner possible as the Arsenal boss breezed past on the way to his seat.
Not the slightest trace of warmth was on show in the exchange. Indeed, the handshake was so icy it was utterly pointless.
Maybe Costa could be called in to act as peacemaker between the two? Actually maybe not.
Man of the match - Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
Controlled midfield as he looked back to his best. Great range of passing and dead-ball expertise saw him set up a great chance for Pedro in the first half and send in the free-kick for Zouma's opener
The stats you need to know
- Fabregas has assisted a goal in two of his three Premier League games against former side Arsenal.
- No team in Premier League history has seen more players sent off than Arsenal (79, level with Everton).
- Arsenal had two players sent off in a Premier League game for only the third time, and the first since 1999 (v Spurs).
- Chelsea have kept six clean sheets in their last eight Premier League games against Arsenal, including the last five in a row.
- Chelsea are unbeaten against Arsenal in their last eight Barclays Premier League encounters (W5 D3).
Who's up next?
Arsenal face another tricky game at north London rivals Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday, before they are away again at Leicester on Saturday. The Blues are at Walsall in the League Cup and then are away at Newcastle next Saturday.

Fabregas mahu lukakan Arsenal (Kosmo)
– AFP

Wenger must be kicking himself over Fabregas snub

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas will come face to face on Sunday.
Sumber : Eurosports
So it was all true. Cesc Fàbregas did indeed, as was confirmed by Arsène Wenger, want a return to Arsenal this summer.
But, Wenger being Wenger, had made his decision and that was final. Arsenal already had ample cover in attacking midfield and a player of Fàbregas' ilk was not a necessity. Other areas were prioritised.
To an extent he was right. With Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, Wenger already had plenty of players wanting to play in central areas. There was no space for Fàbregas; the money could be better spent elsewhere.
A striker, a defensive midfielder and a centre-back were widely regarded as the priority, and yet Wenger only really strengthened in attacking areas. Yes Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchyarrived, but there were departures in defence too. It left them one injury away from a crisis.
So, Wenger rejected the chance to sign one of the world's best midfielders, happy with what he already had, citing Özil's signing as reason enough to miss out on Fàbregas. With the Spaniard's impressive start to life across London, Wenger is now being made to regret not going in for him.
Fàbregas already leads the Premier League for assists, with 6, while Arsenal players have 7 between them; Özil has just 1.
There is little to separate Özil and Fàbregas in terms of creative ability. When the German is at his best there are few better, so in that sense re-signing Fàbregas did not make sense for the Gunners. In truth, Özil is too good to sit on the bench anywhere and moving him out wide has been rather fruitless.

But - and there is a big but - when a player of Fàbregas' quality asks to join your team, you simply have to make room for him.
It must hurt Arsenal fans to see him show such quality in the blue of Chelsea. His stats scream class even more than his displays.
He has created the most chances in the Premier League this season (20), including the most chances deemed 'clear-cut' by the statisticians at Opta; he has completed more passes (453) than any other player, including the most through balls (4). His assists are varied, too; he leads the league for those from both open play (4) and dead balls (2).
His vision is unrivalled by anyone else in England's top tier. Incredibly, despite spending 3 of the last 6 seasons in Spain, Fàbregas has played more accurate through balls (68) than any other player since the start of the 2009/10 season, doing so in 58 appearances. Second in that list isDavid Silva, with 66 in some 136 appearances.
Özil, meanwhile, has drifted in and out of games, looking disinterested and fatigued after a World Cup triumph that consumed him physically and emotionally. He has created a fairly meagre 11 chances (with just that 1 assist), scored once against an Aston Villa side ravaged by illness, and contributed defensively as if he'll be struck down if he strays too near his own goal.
He has unquestionably world class, but there is an argument to say that while Alexis Sanchezwas an exciting signing, the chance to snap up a proven Premier League player in Fàbregas should have been grabbed with both hands.
Fàbregas was always going to be a success upon returning to the Premier League, and while Arsène Wenger will never admit it, it was always going to be a mistake to let him go anywhere other than his preferred destination; the Emirates.
