WENGER: THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS BEHIND LEICESTER

Leicester City have won the hearts of a football-adoring public and Arsene Wenger believes almost the whole country are now behind them.

Leicester City are the neutrals' favourite in the Premier League title race, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman believes Claudio Ranieri's side have won the hearts and imagination of a football-loving public with their swashbuckling style of play that has left the Premier League's biggest clubs in their wake.

The table-toppers dismissed the challenge of second-placed Manchester City in remarkable fashion, as they earned a 3-1 win at the Etihad on Saturday to move six points clear of City and eight points clear of fourth-placed Arsenal, who are chasing a first Premier League win since January 2 when they face AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.

Leicester are five points ahead of Tottenham, who leapfrogged City into second after a 1-0 win over Watford, and Wenger says the unlikely title chasers are worthy of all the praise they receive as their fairy-tale season continues.

Wenger even used Leicester's success to take a shot at the media for criticising his lack of big-name signings.

"The advantage they have until the end of the season, apart from our fans and the City fans and Tottenham fans, the rest of the country is behind Leicester," he said.

"You reproach me about not buying big names but you will support the team who have no big names.

"I think it's great to see Leicester doing so well.

"You always ask me, ‘Why do you not buy a big-name?’ but Leicester is a fantastic example that football is not only about just spending the money.

"It's the quality of work and it's important to think that the quality of the work can get you there. Leicester are a very good example for our league."

Wenger was also full of praise for his opposite number at Bournemouth, Eddie Howe.

"He has done extremely well. When I see his team play, they play well and you see he has done a great job there," he said.

"You cannot rule [Bournemouth's top-four prospects under Howe] out. He is from this country, he is young. He already has good experience.

"I am sure that there are more Eddie Howes in the country. I am absolutely convinced about that.

"Where I agree with you is that it's difficult for them to get in now. With so much at stake, that somebody to be brave in life and say look, I give it to you. It's not easy to find."

Leicester stun City, go six clear

Leicester City took a significant step in their sensational bid for the Barclays Premier League title with a ruthless 3-1 win at Manchester City.

The home team were favourites to replace their opponents at the summit at kick-off, ambitions that were soon dented when Robert Huth handed Leicester a third-minute lead at the Etihad Stadium.

Huth led an impeccable defensive display as Manuel Pellegrini's team had little to show for sustained periods of possession, while appearing vulnerable to their opponents' razor-sharp work on the counter-attack.

Much of the pre-match talk from the Manchester City camp revolved around the desire to give Pellegrini a glorious send-off after confirmation that Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola will take his job from next season.

But their deeds on the pitch failed to measure up to the talk and Leicester exploited them mercilessly.

Riyad Mahrez danced through the defence to score his 14th Barclays Premier League goal of the season before Huth headed his second, with Sergio Aguero's strike coming too late to deny Leicester a six-point advantage at the top.

Claudio Ranieri told television reporters before the match that Manchester City "have to win; we have to play" and his side began with freedom and confidence to startle their hosts.

N'Golo Kante burst through a challenge from Yaya Toure and, when Leicester worked possession wide, Mahrez skipped around left-back Aleksandar Kolarov to win a free-kick.

From Mahrez's delivery, Martin Demichelis allowed Huth to muscle in front of him and bundle the ball into the net.

Barclays Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy raced through a still reeling home defence to call Joe Hart into action, the England goalkeeper also being forced to race out in the 11th minute to deny Danny Drinkwater on the break as Leicester settled into the clinical counter-attacking style that has become their trademark.

David Silva manoeuvred into space inside the Leicester box and shot wide, but there were further concerns for Pellegrini in the 20th minute when Vardy sped past Nicolas Otamendi and Shinji Okazaki just failed to convert his low cross.

Huth then got his body in the way of Kolarov's free-kick after Christian Fuchs fouled Pablo Zabaleta perilously close to the right-hand edge of the area.

The German defender prevented Aguero from getting on the end of Raheem Sterling's looping cross and the striker thudded a shot into Kasper Schmeichel, as Manchester City upped their pressure but failed to find a way through before half-time.

After the break Leicester started in a similar manner to the first hald. Mahrez punished them with a dazzling second.

The excellent Kante drove the latest break and fed the winger to dance around Otamendi's lunge and ease past Demichelis to finish emphatically.

Pellegrini responded with a double change, Toure and Fabian Delph making way for Kelechi Iheanacho and Fernando. The latter almost pulled a goal back when Schmeichel superbly saved his header from Silva's corner.

But a set-piece at the other end left Manchester City further in the mire, Huth heading a second after an hour.

Hart again denied the tireless Vardy, who also blasted into the side-netting in the 81st minute, as the swagger in Leicester's play was on full display.

They pulled one back when Aguero guided a cross from Barclays Premier League debutant substitute Bersant Celina past Schmeichel and the Man City forward almost capitalised on a poor backpass from Danny Simpson to reduce the deficit further.

But Pellegrini's men fightback ended there and they could conclude the weekend in fourth place depending on the results for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Barcelona berpesta gol

Gary Neville's Valencia suffered a humiliating defeat as they were crushed by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at the Nou Camp.

Luis Suarez scored four goals, while Lionel Messi also helped himself to a hat-trick and Neymar missed a penalty.

Valencia's cause was not helped when defender Shkodran Mustafi was sent off for fouling Messi in the first half.

Neville is also without a league win in eight attempts since taking over the club in December.

From triumph to humiliation

Former England and Manchester United full-back Neville was returning to the scene of one of his greatest triumphs.

As a 24-year-old he was part of the United team who won the Champions League with a spectacular late comeback against Bayern Munich in the 1999 final at the Nou Camp.

This time there was to be no miraculous turnaround.

These are testing times for the 40-year-old who was already under pressure before the game against the European champions.

The Copa del Rey had hitherto offered eight-time Premier League winner Neville some solace after five draws and three defeats in La Liga.

All four of his wins from 14 games in charge in Spain have come in this competition - yet this was nothing short of embarrassing.

How Neville's embarrassment unfolded

Valencia were shocking from start to finish and there was only going to be one outcome once Barca went 2-0 up in 12 minutes.

Suarez broke the deadlock after racing on to Neymar's pass before the former Liverpool player doubled the lead, curling home from 10 yards after a breathless move.

Messi completed a delightful move to make it 3-0 before a frantic end to the half.

The Argentina star was denied by the bar and Neymar hit the post from the penalty spot - after being fouled by Mustafi, who was sent off.

It went from bad to worse in the second half, Suarez's back-heel allowing Messi to pick his spot inside the area and take his career tally to 500 goals.

Terrible defending by Valencia allowed Messi to complete his hat-trick and make it 5-0 after winning the ball back before firing past the keeper, who should have saved.

Suarez's hat-trick goal was a close-range header and there was still time for the Uruguay international to get his fourth - and Barca's seventh - as he found the net via the near post.

The return leg takes place at the Mestalla next Wednesday.

Can anyone stop Barca?

As bad as Valencia were, Barcelona produced an exhibition of exquisite football, a masterclass in finishing.

Luis Enrique's name was chanted by the home fans who are starting to believe their team can end the season with five trophies.

Having already sealed the Uefa Super Club and Fifa Club World Cup, they are three points clear at the top of La Liga with one game in hand. They also face Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Barca are in terrific form at the right stage of the season, sweeping aside all before them. They look an unstoppable force.
