Dick Advocaat leaves role as Sunderland head coach

Sunderland have confirmed that head coach Dick Advocaat has left the club.

Sunderland moved off the foot of the table on goal difference after Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham, but Advocaat had reportedly already decided to leave the Stadium of Light going into the match.

Speaking on Saturday, he confirmed he had already decided his future but refused to say whether he would leave, adding: "Today I am the manager. What will happen in the next weeks, months, I cannot say."

However, the club announced on Sunday that the Dutchman had decided to end his reign, with assistant head coach Zeljko Petrovic also departing.

Advocaat told the club's official website: "I want to thank everyone who has stood behind me. This is a very special football club, with so many great people, but I feel it is the right time to do this -- not for me, but for the club.

"I have made the decision to go after only eight games as I felt it was important to give everyone time turn things around -- like we did last year. I am thankful to the chairman for understanding my feelings and I remain on good terms with everyone at the club.

"I wish [chairman Ellis Short and sporting director Lee Congerton], all of the staff, players and of course the supporters, who made me feel so welcome here, the very best of luck for the rest of the season. I have some wonderful memories to take with me and I hope I will return to see everybody again in the future."

Short added: "I am truly saddened by Dick's decision, but I respect him for his honesty and for doing what he feels is right for the club.

"He is a man of integrity and a true football person. He was hugely respectful of the club in taking this decision and he acted 100 percent in our best interests. It is also testament to his character that he has forgone any kind of a financial settlement, something which is very unusual in football.

"I want to place on record my sincere thanks to Dick. He will be remembered with great affection by everyone at Sunderland and there will always be a warm welcome for him here at the Stadium of Light.

"While this isn't a situation any of us envisaged being in, what is important now is that we regroup quickly and focus on the rest of the season."

The 68-year-old had initially taken charge of Sunderland on a short-term deal in March and guided the club to Premier League safety but, though he planned to retire, he was persuaded to sign a one-year contract to lead the club into the 2015-16 campaign.

Many on Twitter absolutely lost their marbles before Leicester’s trip to Norwich on Saturday as Riyad Mahrez was dropped to the bench.

Nobody could quite work out why Claudio Ranieri decided to bench one of the in form players in the Premier League at Carrow Road.

Over half of all Fantasy Football players have the Algerian winger in their side so it isn’t surprising there were a few unhappy customers out there.

An unlucky few even decided to plump for Mahrez as their triple captain – unlucky lads!

Jose Mourinho has tried it all. He has criticised his players and questioned their attitude. He has then back pedalled and killed them with kindness, defending them after defeats. He has dropped some players and left others back in London when the team was in Portugal.

On Saturday, he went for restoring club captain John Terry to the line-up, to no avail; he was hopelessly exposed again. Then he brought on Nemanjic Matic at half time and took him off again after 28 minutes. Humiliated, Matic wasn’t even offered a handshake from his manager.

But it doesn’t really what he tries, what trick he tries to pull. None of them are working at present. Chelsea are abysmal. They have lost four times in the Premier League this season, won just twice and conceded 17 goals. Last season they lost three, and conceded 32 all season. This is not so much a title defence as a humiliating abdication before the autumn leaves have stated to fall.

Yesterday the crowd even booed his substitutions at Stamford Bridge, especially that of Matic. It seems they weren’t buying the gesture politics. Defensive solutions would be more appropriate but one of the great coaches of his generation can find none at present.

At which point you begin to question whether these players want to dig their manager out of this hole. It seems extraordinary to suggest as much when but five months ago they were parading down the Fulham Road with the Premier League title. Yet they play as if they are unconcerned at the growing crisis enveloping Stamford Bridge. 

What made it all the more bizarre was that the evening had started well for Chelsea. The lethargy of the Porto performance was initially replaced by an energetic intensity. Notably Oscar, left at home in midweek, and Hazard, dropped in porto, were insatiable in their appetite to close down Southampton players and get on the ball themselves. It was much more like the Chelsea of last season; even more so when Willian opened the scoring on ten minutes.

In fact, it was rather like the Chelsea of last week, the Brazilian repeating his trick of curling in the ball from a lengthy free kick thirty yards out. What looked like a magnificent cross had sufficient spin on it to curl and curl on t the post and in the net past the despairing out-stretched arm of Stekelenburg. It was rather magnificent; being Brazilian, the odds were he meant it. 

Chelsea seemed much more at ease with the world. When Fabregas and Oscar exchanged crisp passes inside the box and the Brazilian struck a shot goal-wards which Maarten Stekelenburg grasped out of the air, it seemed as though some of the joie de vivre of the title-winning might be returning.

It didn’t last. Chelsea can’t deliver over 45 minutes at present, let alone 90. Slowly Southampton eased themselves back into the game and Sadio Mane began to torment in the manner in which Porto’s players had in midweek.

It was to referee’s Robert Madley’s discredit that he didn’t award the excellent Senegalese a penalty on 30 minutes when clumsy Ramires felled him. It was to his shame that he booked him a minute later, when Ivanovic felled him and he was deemed to have dived. 

Like most of Ivanovic’s opponents this season he was simply much too quick for the Serbian. The diving directive is all well and good in theory; in practice it is almost impossible to police with the naked eye.

Victor Wanyama then tested Begovic with a swirling cross which threatened to drop in under the cross bar. By now Chelsea had conceded the initiative and would never recover it. 

They dropped deep and failed to compete as they had in the opening quarter of the game. So little surprise when Jose Fonte lofted a long ball which Graziano Pelle chested down quite superbly into the path of Steven Davis. The quality of his half volley matched the assist; Begovic barely saw it. 

Having conceded, Chelsea could not re-adjust to their previous superiority. Mane by now was thoroughly enjoying himself, his pace and movement pulling Chelsea one way and another. Begovic denied him sliding in on 48 minutes and Ivanovic blocked him as the ball rebounded. Ward-Prowse then struck wide from the corner.

Chelsea felt aggrieved when Fabregas’ lovely through ball saw Falcao felled by Stekelenburg – the Colombian stated his fall a fraction top early and received a yellow card instead of the penalty he might have won had he not been so eager to fall into the challenge.

Yet, the pattern of the game was emerging. Chelsea were struggling, Mane was in the ascendancy. So when on the hour, when Pelle was allowed by Gary Cahill to play in a dangerous looking ball, which Terry completely misjudged with his sliding interception and Mane found himself clear on goal, the result was inevitable,. The Senegalese cooly dispatched the finish and then proceeded to celebrate in ecstatic fashion in front of the Southampton fans.

Mane then was fouled by Falcao, the Colombian fortunate not to attract a second yellow. And on 70 minutes, came the denouement. Hazard gave the ball away in midfield and Mane sprinted away, through the Chelsea defence and released Pelle wide on his right. 

The Italian looked up, shot and finished superbly from just inside the box. Chelsea had been well beaten again. More worrying, they look wholly incapable of halting their decline.

Sergio Aguero mencipta sejarah Liga Perdana Inggeris menghasilkan lima gol dalam masa terpantas dalam satu perlawanan, iaitu hanya 20 minit dalam kemenangan besar 6-1 ke atas Newcastle di Stadium Etihad.

Ia prestasi yang mendadak buat Kun selepas dikritik berikutan kemarau gol dengan penyudahan yang kurang tajam dalam beberapa perlawanan sejak di awal musim ini. Ternyata penyerang Argentina ini masih unggul selepas merangkul anugerah Kasut Emas Liga Perdana musim lalu.

City turun untuk mengelak dari menerima kekalahan ketiga berturut-turut selepas tewas kepada West Ham dan Tottenham Hotspur, namun menang 2-1 melawan Borussia Monchengladbach dalam saingan Liga Juara-Juara peringkat Kumpulan D, Rabu lalu.

Pasukan pelawat, Newcastle masih belum meraih sebarang kemenangan dalam Liga Perdana musim ini namun seri 2-2 dengan Chelsea dalam perlawanan terakhir mereka di St James’ Park dan seri 0-0 dengan Manchester United di Old Trafford di awal musim.

City bermula dengan meyakinkan apabila tepisan sepakan percuma Kevin De Bruyne oleh Tim Krul terlantun dan hinggap di kaki David Silva untuk dihantarkan kepada Fernando, namun sempat dihadang pertahanan the Magpies.

Selang seminit kemudian, Silva pula memperolehi bola yang ditanduk keluar Kevin Mbabu lalu cuba dirembat masuk Merlin namun melambung tinggi melepasi palang.

Newcastle turut menemui ruang apabila hantaran Mbabu menemui Aleksandar Mitrovic namun percubaannya berjaya ditangkap Joe Hart. Pada minit ke-18 Mitrovic sekali lagi mendapat peluang dan cubaannya kali ini masuk untuk mendahului tuan rumah 0-1.

Sepuluh minit kemudian, penyerang muda asal Serbia itu hampir menambah gol kedua pelawat namun Hart tampil menepis untuk mengelak gawangnya dari terbolos berturutan. Pada minit ke-41 kerjasama Silva dan Pablo Zabaleta ditanduk Fernandinho kepada Sergio Aguero yang menunggu di pintu gol lalu disundul masuk untuk gol penyamaan.

Ia sekaligus menamatkan penantian gol melalui perlawanan terbuka sejak kali terakhir dijaringkannya ketika menentang Chelsea, Jun 2015 lalu.

Sekembali di babak kedua, permainan menjadi lebih rancak dan hanya empat minit selepas perlawanan disambung semula hantaran cantik Kevin De Bruyne menemui Aguero untuk meledak gol kedua diikuti gol ketiga seminit kemudiannya menjadikan jaringan hatrik kelima Kun buat kelab.

Ia ternyata tidak terhenti di situ, apabila tiga minit kemudiannya, Kevin De Bruyne pula menyempurnakan cantik hantaran silang Jesus Navas dengan tendangan volley menjadikan kedudukan 4-1. Ia juga merupakan gol keempat De Bruyne musim ini semenjak menyertai City dari Wolfsburg.

Siri pemusnahan the Citizens terus berlanjutan apabila Aguero menambah gol kelima dan keenam selang dua minit kedua-duanya melalui hantaran lintang Silva untuk membawa kemenangan bergaya 6-1, kemenangan terbesar Liga Perdana Inggeris musim ini .

Aguero turut menjadi pemain kelima dalam sejarah Liga Perdana yang menghasilkan lima gol dalam satu perlawanan dan tanpa perlu diperjelaskan lagi telah dinobatkan sebagai Pemain Terbaik Perlawanan (MOTM).

Berikutan kemenangan tersebut, City kembali ke puncak carta Liga Perdana Inggeris selepas 8 perlawanan dengan Manchester United akan menentang Arsenal di Stadium Emirates jam 4 petang Ahad (11 malam Malaysia).

Saingan Liga Perdana akan berhenti rehat selama dua minggu untuk memberi laluan kepada kejohanan antarabangsa termasuk Kelayakan Euro 2016 dengan Bournemouth menjadi lawan seterusnya pada 17 Oktober di Stadium Etihad, sebelum menerima kunjungan Sevila di peringkat Kumpulan D, Liga Juara-Juara pada 21 Oktober dan bertemu Manchester United di Old Trafford pada 25 Oktober.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney claims it is harder to win the Premier League now than in any of his 5 championship seasons.

Rooney takes United to Arsenal on Sunday as genuine title challengers and a repeat of last season's victory at the Emirates will see Louis van Gaal's side go into the international break as league leaders.

But the 29-year-old confesses he finds the Premier League dogfight tougher than ever, thanks to the strength in depth across all 20 clubs.

'Six or seven years ago, there were games you knew you would win but now every team has progressed,' said Rooney. 'You see teams at the bottom of the league buying players for a lot of money. It makes it a better league, more competitive. Physically you are pushing right to the end of games.

'In the past, you could be leading 3-0 or 4-0 after an hour and take your foot off the gas to concentrate on the next game. But now you must keep on until the end.

'We want to be top, obviously, but this is a tough league. There are no easy games.'

Rooney, who turns 30 later this month, has never gone three years in a row without winning the Premier League at Old Trafford.

That run is under threat this season, with Manchester City and Chelsea having lifted the trophy in the last two years, but United have started this campaign impressively under the pragmatic leadership of Van Gaal. They have lost only one of their seven league games so far.

'The manager's experience is important. We know what he wants and it's something we work on every day in training,' said Rooney, who scored his first league goal since April in last weekend's victory against Sunderland.

'Arsenal have some quality players. We need to stop their danger players and take our chances. It is a chance to extend our gap over Arsenal to six points and make sure we are top going into the international break.

'It is always a tough game at the Emirates but I am sure Arsenal know it's a big game for them as well.'

United's player of the season so far has been central defender Chris Smalling, who is showing the form that saw Arsenal and United chase his services from Fulham in 2010.

Van Gaal has named the 25-year-old England defender as his 'third captain' behind Rooney and Michael Carrick, and Smalling skippered United against PSV Eindhoven when they were both absent.

Smalling said: 'It's been significant for me, when you are one of the leaders of the team, people will look to you to gee them up when things aren't going so well.

'I feel that I quite like that responsibility. I've definitely added more consistency into my game, particularly since the second half of last season.

'It was something I needed to add to my game rather than having a good performance, and then only an okay one. It's nice to get that consistant run and be recognised but it's a case of only being as good as your last game so I'll be looking to build on that against Arsenal.

'It seems a long time ago that I was linked with Arsenal! There was interest but I am happy to be where I am now.'

Smalling's new status means it is unlikely Van Gaal will repeat his mistake in the summer of calling him Mike Smalling — a blunder that has been celebrated in song by United supporters.

While the £36million signing of teenager Anthony Martial on transfer deadline day now looks inspired, having been criticised at the time, the United manager frets that the long-term injury to another youngster Luke Shaw weakens the club's title hopes this season.

Shaw, 20, is out until spring at the earliest after suffering a nasty broken leg and Van Gaal has used Italian Matteo Darmian, usually a right-back, to fill in on the left.

Van Gaal said: 'This was going to be the season of Luke Shaw. His was the only position in which we don't have a double option. So the circumstances are not so good.

'I have to look for solutions. You have seen that I have tried it with Ashley Young, I have tried it with Darmian, I have tried it with Marcos Rojo and with Daley Blind.

'Four people have played in that position after Shaw and we have won every game but, in my opinion, we don't have a good substitute for Luke Shaw with the same qualities, so it's a big blow.'

One defeat, of course, could deflate all the current optimism. Van Gaal will emphasise to his players not to expect Arsenal's unexpected 3-2 home defeat against Olympiakos to help them this afternoon.

Smalling is also aware that United lost at Swansea in their final fixture before the last international break. 'It is a long two weeks when you don't get that win.' he said. 'Arsenal is going to be a crucial game.'
