Arsenal came out on top in the battle of the Barclays Premier League title favourites as goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud beat Manchester City 2-1 at Emirates Stadium.

Mesut Ozil was, again deservedly, Man of the Match today. Two assists and a tremendous amount of defensive work made him an obvious choice but you can see how important he is the minute he goes off the pitch. He's so calm, assured and reliable on the ball - Arsenal can play to him and know that he won't lose it, and more often than not, can create something at the same time.

David Silva, the player he was being compared with earlier, was marked out of the game by Flamini and in the moments he did get the ball near the Arsenal goal wasn't able to create anything of note. He's still a class act but Ozil enjoyed himself tonight.

Two goals from Odion Ighalo helped to give Watford an impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Sunday, their fourth consecutive Barclays Premier League triumph.

A mistake from Adam Bogdan, who was replacing the injured Simon Mignolet in Liverpool's goal, allowed Nathan Ake to score the opener. Ighalo, who took his Barclays Premier League goals tally to 12 this season, netted shortly after with a neat finish before sealing the victory with a header five minutes from time.

The win puts Watford within a point of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, while Liverpool remain ninth and have won only three of nine league matches since Jurgen Klopp took charge.

Liverpool made four alterations to their team as Bogdan, Roberto Firmino, Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho came in for injured Dejan Lovren, Mignolet and James Milner, while Christian Benteke dropped to the bench.

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores: "We have a lot of matches and we never underestimate the teams we play. We are completely happy with the performance. It was an amazing victory against an amazing team."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "We made many more wrong decisions today. Our reaction was really bad. With the wind and not the best pitch, we were playing in small spaces. We were playing the way they want and they closed us down. The start to the second half was very good, but we didn’t score, and then their third goal - game over."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “I can say a lot of things but every word is too much I think. You can see what confidence is doing to the players. Now it’s very important that everybody sticks together, but that was not good enough today. We have to win against Norwich and we know that.

"We've lost three matches in a row so it’s not happening so much for Manchester United. We can’t accept that and that’s why I have to repeat, we have to stick together and believe in ourselves. I’ve encountered these circumstances also with other teams and other staff. The main thing is that you have to be professional and do the things that you have to do and work very hard to come out of this bad period."

Norwich City manager Alex Neil: “It’s a really important win. We’ve been in most of the games against the bigger sides, our problem has been that we’ve been the makers of our own downfall if you like, but today we eradicated those mistakes. The boys were fantastic and deserved to win the game.

“We wanted to attack this league and sometimes you take a bit of a hiding on the back of that, but since we lost to Newcastle we’ve been a lot more resilient and harder to break down. Hopefully we’ve kick-started something with this win. We deserved this victory. We’ve got important games coming up, we’ve not got as many points on the board as we’d have liked but this is a welcome three points and hopefully we can add to that tally over the Christmas period."

Chelsea Football Club can confirm Guus Hiddink has been appointed first-team manager until the end of the season.

The owner and the Board welcome back a coach with a wealth of top-level experience and success, including his previous spell with the club in 2009 when we lifted the FA Cup.

Mr Abramovich and the Board believe that Guus has what it takes to get the best out of our talented squad.

Guus said: 'I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.

‘I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans.'

The Dutchman will be at Stamford Bridge for today’s match but Steve Holland will take control of team matters for the game alongside Eddie Newton, who will now take on the role of assistant first-team coach.

Steve has been an important and influential member of the coaching staff since 2009, while Eddie is Chelsea through and through, having served us as a player and a coach, re-joining the club in 2012 and helping us win the Champions League.

Guus took temporary charge of Chelsea in February 2009, losing just one league game as we recovered from a poor first half of the season to finish third in the Premier League, guaranteeing Champions League football for the next campaign and signing off in style thanks to a 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton at Wembley.

That role was combined with being coach of Russia, one of six international posts he has held during a coaching career which has spanned three decades.

Guus’s first managerial job was in his homeland with PSV, a club he had represented during a 15-year playing career. As coach, he lifted three league titles and the European Cup in 1988. Three more followed during a second stint there between 2002 and 2006, with the intervening years seeing him coach in Turkey and Spain as well as lead the Dutch, South Korean and Australian national teams.

As South Korea coach, he led them to a stunning fourth-place at the 2002 World Cup on home soil, the same achievement as with the Netherlands four years earlier.

Having taken the Russian job in 2006, Guus led them to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 before taking the reins at Chelsea on a temporary basis in early 2009. A 1-0 win at Aston Villa in his first game set the tone for the remainder of the season, and it took a last-minute Andres Iniesta strike on a controversial night to deny the Blues a place in the Champions League final.

Guus’s first stay in west London ended well, however, with the whole of Stamford Bridge singing his name following our final home game of the season and the fans unveiling a huge ‘thank you’ banner at Wembley prior to the FA Cup final, in which we came from behind to win.

Since then, Guus has coached Turkey and the Netherlands, as well as spending 18 months at Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, where he signed Willian from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Jose Mourinho SACKED

Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have today parted company by mutual consent.

All at Chelsea thank Jose for his immense contribution since he returned as manager in the summer of 2013.

His three league titles, FA Cup, Community Shield and three League Cup wins over two spells make him the most successful manager in our 110-year history. But both Jose and the board agreed results have not been good enough this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways.

The club wishes to make clear Jose leaves us on good terms and will always remain a much-loved, respected and significant figure at Chelsea. His legacy at Stamford Bridge and in England has long been guaranteed and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Stamford Bridge.
