The former Blackpool winger hit one from all of 40 yards at Selhurst Park, but it wasn't enough as Rangers slipped to a 3-1 defeat against the Eagles

QPR were left deep in the relegation mire after yet another defeat - but Matt Phillipsmay well have scored the goal of the season at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace came out on top 3-1 in the Premier League's lunchtime kick-off, but Phillips' second half consolation goal took the headlines.

Phillips’ strike was the goal from the longest distance in the Premier League this season at 40 yards.

He picked the ball up on halfway, strode forward a few yards and unleashed an unstoppable drive into Julian Speroni's top right-hand corner.

Unfortunately for Phillips, first half goals from Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur and Joel Ward for Palace had already ended the game as a contest.

Rangers could be left six points adrift of safety after the weekend's fixtures have been completed.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed his delight after watching his side beat West Ham 3-0 at the Emirates.

Goals from Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini gave Wenger's side the points as they closed the gap on Manchester City in second to a point.

And ahead of his side's crucial trip to Monaco in the Champions League next week,the Frenchman was pleased with the performance.

He said: "We were weaker at the start of the second half, but overall we kept going and created many chances.

Danny Welbeck nets winner as Arsenal beat Man Utd in Fa Cup

Danny Welbeck came back to haunt Louis van Gaal as the Manchester United manager was subjected to a night of despair and defeat at Old Trafford.

Capitalising on a horror backpass from Antonio Valencia, Welbeck sent Arsenal through to the semifinals of the FA Cup with a 61st-minute winner after Wayne Rooney had equalised Nacho Monreal's opener.

To pile yet more misery on the United boss, he watched Angel Di Maria get sent off towards the end of the 2-1 defeat for pulling referee Michael Oliver's shirt as he reacted angrily to being booked for diving.

Replays showed Di Maria was pulled back by Aaron Ramsey before he tumbled to the ground, but the way in which he reacted will not please United boss Van Gaal.

CHELSEA juara Capital One Cup

John Terry’s first cup final goal for Chelsea and a Diego Costa strike deflected into the net won the London derby showpiece at Wembley.

The deadlock in what had been a tight encounter with defences on top was broken shortly before half-time when the skipper finished off a set-piece. From then on there only looked likely to be one winner an indeed Jose Mourinho’s men doubled our lead inside the hour when Diego Costa’s drive from out wide took a touch off Kyle Walker on its way in.

Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas then went close but two goals proved to be enough to win the fifth League Cup in Chelsea history, not least due to a collection of fine pieces of defending in the second half which kept the clean sheet intact and Spurs at bay.

ARSENAL 1-3 MONACO - MARTIN SAMUEL AT THE EMIRATES: It was his goal, after 53 minutes, that may have done for Arsenal in this tournament this season. That it was Monaco's second of the night without reply makes this one of the shocks of the Champions League campaign so far. We knew Monaco could keep it tight. Nobody fancied them taking a two-goal lead back to their home second leg, though. And it could have been more.

• Dimitar Berbatov struck a clinical second just after the break to give the Gunners a mountain to climb

Arsenal's Champions League hopes in tatters after Monaco defeat

Arsenal shot themselves in the foot just when they looked to have grabbed a Champions League lifeline, losing 3-1 at home to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. The Gunners were well below their best and Monaco raced into a two-goal lead shortly after half-time through Geoffrey Kondogbia and Dimitar Berbatov.

Olivier Giroud missed some gilt-edged chances to bring his side back into it before he was substituted. And Arsenal's hopes seemed to have been given a late boost by a 91st-minute goal from sub Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But in the 94th minute Oxlade-Chamberlain tripped over the ball, Monaco broke quickly and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco made no mistake for what could be a decisive third.
