Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre score in 2-1 win as United lose for the first time this season
Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre scored first-half goals as Huddersfield Town handed Manchester United their first league defeat of the season, winning 2-1 at the John Smith's Stadium.
Huddersfield went ahead on 28 minutes when Mooy reacted first to a David De Gea save and shot into the bottom corner.
Six minutes later the home side were 2-0 up when United's Victor Lindelof, on for the injured Phil Jones, misjudged a long ball from Jonas Lossl and Depoitre was on hand to finish.
United pulled a goal back when a cross from Romelu Lukaku was nodded in by Marcus Rashford with 12 minutes to go but, despite late pressure, could not find an equaliser and fell five points behind Manchester City, the leaders.

EUROPEAN EXPLOITS DIDN’T HELP“The conditions are the same for everyone, for them and for us. The only thing that is different is that we played a game two days ago, they didn’t. But we already knew for a long, long time that is a difference in quality – one plays in the Champions League, the other doesn’t. So, the difference in quality is compensated by the fact that one team plays more than the other. That’s football.”
MISTAKES NOT TO BLAME
“It’s not fair to say that the mistakes were responsible for the defeat, because the mistakes were in the context of the overall performance. If we are playing amazingly well and then we lose because of an individual mistake, then we can say ‘okay we lost because of an individual mistake’. But no, since the first minute, the game was poor for us. We paid the price and I think deservedly.”
